The TourGate Knowledge Gateway at Business Enterprises at the University of Pretoria (Pty) Ltd (BE at UP) is:

• Provides a virtual knowledge network, containing information that has been integrated, analysed and interpreted in support of the tourism industry
• Serves as an accessible and user-friendly central knowledge and reference resource to facilitate support to tourism destinations, in particular to their commitments to rural tourism development
• Complements and adds value to current efforts at national, provincial and local levels in the industry
• A critical success factor in future tourism destination competitiveness.

The main objective of TourGate is to;

• Develop a tourism knowledge management system to enhance decision support
• Facilitate better rural tourism development in South Africa
• Improve the quality and ease of decision-making with an electronic information system, and
• Deal with relevant tourism and tourism related data.

It should be emphasised that this initiative focuses on the tourism industry and not the tourist. The project was piloted in three areas in the Limpopo Province namely, Modimolle, Thabazimbi and Bela-Bela.
